Essential Books and Recommended Reading

Natural Health
Welcome to my natural health collection. On this page you will find links to books I recommend, which you can purchase directly from Fishpond online bookstore in New Zealand and Australia, or from Amazon in North America.
In my experience, once on these sites it pays to search for other copies of the same book, to help you find the best deal.
Toni Jeffreys - Your Health at Risk
This one is the perfect thing for those social occasions when you're stuck for conversation: "Did you know that margarine has caused more coronaries than it has prevented...?" It also makes a great gift. Jeffreys reveals suppressed truths left, right and centre and the best thing about it is that they are all credibly referenced from orthodox medical journals and research - oh, the irony. MSG, sugar, aspartame, fats, heart bypasses, nicotine, prozac, the bra, golf, mobile phones, immunisation, root canals, the list of topics is huge. This kind of book excites me because it can reach so many people.
|
Toni Jeffereys - Cancer Conspiracy: What You Must Know about the Worst Plague in Human History
Toni Jeffereys' Your Health At Risk was awesome. She pulls out scientific research, mostly from orthodox medical journals, to turn everything your doctor has been telling you on its head. The last 20 pages of this 300-odd page book are just the references! It's unfortunately not a pretty picture, especially if you know someone who has not survived cancer and so you could find the book making you quite angry. But on the other hand, for the great many who actually may be able to overcome it, this book could be what you're looking for.
|
Valerie Ann Worwood - The Fragrant Pharmacy
This is one of my most frequently referenced books (probably in my top 3) when it comes to treating my own family. Kids respond so brilliantly to aromatherapy - colds, fevers, worms, indigestion, colic, etc. Worwood references handy remedies and essential oil recipes for hundreds of conditions. I've never known any remedy I've tried from her book to fail.

Samuel Hahnemann - Organon of Medicine - Fifth Edition
If you really want to understand homeopathy you have to start here. While large tracts of this book are extremely intellectual there are some incredibly profound insights into the true homeopathic principle. Cool water for a burn? Not according to Hahnemann. You may not believe his recommendation but I have found it to work, especially when you understand that pain is not always a bad thing.
|
Dr Sandra Cabot - The Liver Cleansing Diet
I first read this not long after starting in Body Electronics and had the fortune of seeing Dr Cabot speak in person the same year. It speaks very simply and plainly and gives practical suggestions to achieve the outcome of a happy liver. By the way, if you don't have access to a specific herbal formula for you, her Livatone powdered product has worked well for many I have suggested it to (ideally, of course, in conjunction with the dietary changes she recommends).
|
Hulda Clark - The Cure for All Diseases: With Many Case Histories
While certainly treating from the outside-in as far as identifying frequencies of harmful organisms for treatment purposes is concerned, Hulda Clark yet provides many useful insights into environmental dangers and the avoidance of toxins.
|
Brenda Watson - Renew Your Life - Improved Digestion and Detoxification
I got a copy of this last time I was in America. There are a lot of health suggestions very compatible with the healing programme of Body Electronics here, all presented in a very palatable way.
|
Robert O Becker - The Body Electric: Electromagnetism and the Foundation of Life
This is one of those "I wish I didn't know about that" topics. Once you understand the effects of electric and magnetic fields from power lines, alarm clocks, TVs, electric blankets, you'll realise you're surrounded on all sides. I use a few field measurement devices and it's truly amazing what you find just walking around your house. The good news is there's lots of things you can do to make your home safer, starting with your bedroom as the first priority. The fact is we are electric beings, so why wouldn't we be affected by external fields?
|
Edward Bach - Heal Thyself: Explanation of the Real Cause and Cure of Disease
What a humbling experience, reading this gem. Bach was a very successful Harley Street doctor who chucked it all in to find deeper levels of helping people with the Bach Flower Remedies, as they later became known. This book reveals his remarkable insights and spiritual nature that we can all learn from. You may never use Bach Flower Remedies, but you have to read this book.

Edward Bach - The Essential Writings of Dr Edward Bach: The 12 Healers and Heal Thyself
Great value - "The 12 Healers" (on Bach Flower Remedies, one of my most frequently used reference books) AND Heal Thyself. A great combination. The 12 Healers lists Bach's original 12 remedies as well as the full list of 38 he eventually settled on, which he believed were sufficient to treat every emotional condition.
|
B C Wolverton - How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants That Purify Your Home or Office
Essential reading for creating a happy and safe home - from the humble Peace Lily to the stunning Poinsetia, houseplants can purify our air of all sorts of toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde, as well as being emotionally uplifting.
|
DC Jarvis - Folk Medicine
This is one of the great classics of natural health reading and encourages one back to a more in-touch-with-nature approach to all illness. Around 50 years old now, it's one of those books that just gets reprinted and reprinted because it's so simple and practical. Jarvis uses traditional round-the-home remedies like honey and cider vinegar for all sorts of common ailments - you could too.

Jonathan Eisen - Suppressed Inventions
Everything from cancer cures to cars that run on water, signs of intelligent life on Mars to free energy machines. This book is a real eye opener and illustrates how much resistance there can be to new ideas when egos and profit get in the way.

Ed McCabe - Flood Your Body with Oxygen: Therapy for Our Polluted World
I was hoping to find "Oxygen Therapies" by McCabe, but this one is probably close enough. Here is a man who has been persecuted for his beliefs to the n'th degree but is trying to bring out the truth anyway. You can read more about why I recommend this book here.

Peter Kelder - Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth
This little book has been republished and slightly altered a number of times over the last few decades. Instruction in these 5 simple exercises (the Five Tibetan Rites) was part-and-parcel of every Body Electronics Instructor's Seminar in the '90's and surely of interest to anyone interested in longevity.
|
Peter Kelder - Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth: Vol 2
I had no idea there was a sequel, but written by the same author, this promises to be worth a read.

Melvin E Page and H Leon Abrams - Your Body is Your Best Doctor!: Formerly, Health Versus Disease
|
I have one book by Melvin Page, "Degeneration Regeneration." Page is quite a technical writer, being a biochemist and dentist but some of the things he has thought of measuring demonstrate just how easily our body's chemistry is swayed by our diet. Page realised that diet affected teeth because diet affects the whole body, the teeth therefore being a barometer of your overall health. Want to know how to balance your blood and save more than just your teeth? Read the book.
|
Bill Mollison - The Permaculture Book of Ferment and Human Nutrition
Permaculture is such a fascinating topic. This book is loaded with mind-altering perspectives on ecology, food and health. It's a gem. Some great recipes for fermenting your food too.
|
Rudolf Steiner - Agriculture: An Introductory Reader
I've read lots of Steiner books. They're deep and insightful, although often require a great deal of concentration and pondering. Well worth the effort in this case. As you may already know, Biodynamic organic farming is founded on Steiner's principles.
|
William Campbell Douglass - The Milk Book - The Milk of Human Kindness Is Not Pasteurized
Ok. So I haven't read every book here, but the topic is important and it could be what you're looking for.
|
Ann Wigmore and Lee Pattinson - The Blending Book
Well, no, I haven't read this one, but in my experience if it's Ann Wigmore then it's worth a read. Check out this quote: "The foods you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison." She's radical but she's got a point.
|
Li and Richard Smith - Wheatgrass: Superfood for a new Millennium
Nope - haven't read it. We need more information about wheatgrass though - it is one of nature's absolute superfoods. You can see some other wheatgrass/barley grass books here.
|
Steve Meyerowitz - Sprouts the Miracle Food: The Complete Guide to Sprouting
You may be wondering if I read many books at all...Sprouting is a survival skill and produces some of the cheapest, best tasting, vital and nutritious foods you can get. Even the least green-fingered of us can sprout successfully.
|
Braun & Cohen - Herbs and Natural Supplements: An Evidence Based Guide
I was fortunate to be awarded this book for winning top honours in my graduating class at naturopathic college. It's a weighty tome citing nothing but scientific research backing up the efficacy of herbal remedies. Perfect for those who prefer an "evidence-based" approach.
|
Simon Mills & Kerry Bone - Principles and Practice of Phytotherapy: Modern Herbal Medicine
Now this is a real technical book, really designed for herbalists and naturopathic students who are right into their pharmacology. This is no Mills and Boon (even though the authors' names look strikingly similar), but if you have a passion for herbs, you may love this book. And yes, also from my wife's collection.
|
William C Dement - The Promise of Sleep: A Pioneer in Sleep Medicine Explores the Vital Connection Between Health, Happiness, and a Good Night's Sleep
Dr Doug Morrison gave this book a big thumbs up. So often taken for granted, the ability to have a good night's refreshing sleep is shown to be crucial for our well-being, physically and emotionally.
|
Michael Bloch - FM - The Life of Frederick Matthias Alexander: Founder of the Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is a wonderful method of retraining postural habits. Its founder, Frederick Matthias Alexander is shown to be both an inspired pioneer and a man of many great philosophies.
|
Leslie Kaminoff - Yoga Anatomy
Cleverly illustrated, this book is rather useful for anyone who wants to understand the muscle and joint actions that occur in each posture and how to best work with the breath in that posture. Also, we know in Body Electronics that each muscle has a reflex action back to various organs and glands and here we have a book that shows exactly which muscle is being worked and in what way by each asana. This would help identify the yoga necessary to work on, based on other symptoms being experienced. I'd call that valuable and essential!
|
Inge Dougans - Reflexology: The 5 Elements and Their 12 Meridians - A Unique Approach
Even though few reflexology books and foot charts are in 100% agreement with Dr Ray's findings in Body Electronics, I've included this book to provide a wider picture of health, particularly as it incorporates Chinese energetic acupuncture wisdom.
|
Mark Mayer - Calcification: The Aging Factor, How to Defuse the Calcium Bomb
I'm pretty excited by this find because the dissolution of calcification is a major focus of Body Electronics. I will however point out that calcification is not the prime cause of aging and is itself the effect of mental and emotional resistances to life and not nutrition or genetic factors alone.
|
William Garner Sutherland - Contributions of Thought: The Collected Writings of William Garner Sutherland
Sutherland is the godfather of cranial osteopathy, an absolute boon to mankind, as a non-invasive way of restoring a degree of spinal, cranial and general physical harmony. How can we not be interested in this man's philosophy? As revolutionary as Sutherland's thinking on the function of the body undoubtedly was in his day (and still today), he owes much of it to Emmanuel Swedenborg, some 200 years earlier. Nonetheless, his brilliance lies in understanding Swedenborg where almost all do not. If you want to check out Swedenborg for yourself, Trobridge is a great place to start.
|
Edward G Holtman - Cure Yourself of Tendinitis
I haven't read this one, but a little research indicates that the standard medical advice is for rest and to avoid over-use, but there is much more you can do.
|
Francine Milford - Usui Reiki: Master Level
Reiki is quite compatible with Body Electronics. In fact, during one of the Body Electronics Instructors Seminars I was at, Dr Ray encouraged the entire class to take the first initiation.
|
Herbert Shelton - Basic Health Teachings of Dr. R. T. Trall - Pamphlet
Dr Trall was one of the very first Natural Hygiene practitioners. Natural Hygiene is a very outspoken and no-nonsense natural healing method, utilising strictly nature-only approaches. Thanks again Kessinger Books.
|
Kevin Trudeau - More Natural Cures Revealed: Previously Censored Brand Name Products That Cure Disease
Actually, this one was recommended to me by a friend, but I haven't read it yet.
|
Wynford Dore - Dyslexia: The Miracle Cure
I haven't read this one either, but after watching a video recently about their work I believe the Dore Programme has a lot to offer families with reading, writing, spelling and social skill problems such as dyslexia. Movement of the body and physical co-ordination is integrally tied-in with the development of the speech and visual centres of the brain.
|
Michael Merrill - Vitamin D: Antidote to Winter and the Darkness
I'd like to hear from someone who has read this. In this age of scaremongering about sunlight and skin cancer, we may easily be creating the opposite imbalance of insufficient sunlight. This is not about "getting a tan" - we need a little sunlight on as much of our body as possible every day. 15-20 minutes in off-peak periods (i.e. not when the sun is at its peak) is all that is required. Caution is also advised with supplemental Vitamin D, as it is a very difficult thing to keep natural, with the amount of processing required. My advice is to work sensibly with the sun.
